Through the Years: The Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Chronograph in Action
On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the establishment of Ulysse Nardin last year, it launched an impressive series of Marine Torpilleur limited edition watches. During a recent visit to our venerable archives, WatchTime set sail with the Marine Tourpilleur Chronograph, complete with the added complication of the annual calendar.
The French term torpilleur refers to a small boat designed to carry torpedoes against larger, more heavily armed battleships. The name was reintroduced at Ulysse Nardin in 2017, aptly chosen for a watch with an in-house movement at a very competitive price. On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the founding of Ulysse Nardin in 2021, the Swiss watchmaker is full of enthusiasm again and has launched a complete series of Torpilleur watches to pay tribute to its role as a timekeeper supplier to many of the world's navies in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Speaking of time travel, founded in 1846 by 23-year-old Ulysse Nardin (January 22, 1823 - February 20, 1876), the Le Locle-based company soon discovered a desire for pocketable and nautical objects that could be measured. The seven new models of the Marine Torpilleur Anniversary Collection highlight different aspects of the brand's current capabilities: in-house movements, silicon components, tourbillon and moon phases, enamel dials and, for the chronographs shown here, the additional measurement of elapsed time and almanac. Ulysse Nardin has decided to only equip watches with the UN-118 (enamel blue and panda) and UN-119 (moon phase) automatic movements with a COSC certificate. Hotier commented: "With the invention and use of new materials such as silicon, we think it is more important to test the performance of the movement in the wearable state, that is, once it is placed in the case with the dial and hands. under the same conditions as those who wear the watch. Available with a choice of varnished white or matt blue dials, the Marine Torpilleur Chronograph with Annual Calendar is powered by a UN-153 manufacturer movement that replaces the earlier UN-150 caliber. The dial features silver-toned counters at 9 and 3 o'clock and an annual calendar at 9 o'clock. The date at 6 o'clock changes automatically (synchronized with the month), and the annual calendar system (first used on a perpetual calendar model in 1996) can be adjusted forwards and backwards through the large crown (meaning that the month will change if its owner accidentally moves it) too far, the date can be easily adjusted both ways). The Ulysse Nardin Caliber UN-153 can be seen through the sapphire transparent case back, and the partially skeletonized rotor is decorated with the brand's nautical-inspired anchor pattern, surrounded by a frosted textured surface.

The version shown here (Ref. 1533-320LE-0A-175/1A) has a crisp white dial with Roman numerals, blued steel "pear-shaped" steel hands and a balanced bicompax chronograph layout. The watch is mounted on a brown leather strap with four oversized white stitching; this version is also available on a blue strap (Ref. 1533-320LE-0A-175/1B).
The chronograph's 50-meter water-resistant stainless steel case measures 44mm in diameter, making it the largest member of the Torpilleur line, but thanks to a relatively compact length (lug-to-lug) of 49mm. Best of all, its white dial and blue hands make it fairly nimble, navigating between elegance and an almost sporty look with ease. Dial legibility is generally good (and likely better than the blue-dial version), but, unsurprisingly, the lack of luminous material on the hands and dial does reduce its ability to cruise after dark.luxury replica watch
In comparison, the Torpilleur Chronograph is 0.66mm taller than the 13.00mm IWC Portugieser Chronograph, and 44mm in diameter compared to the 41mm IWC stainless steel case. Its main advantage, however, is probably the added annual calendar function, an equally user-friendly and convenient feature alongside the power reserve indicator. Add in-house movements, unique nautical designs and a relatively small production run of watches, and you'll have plenty of reasons to embark on a horological journey with Ulysse Nardin this year.
